These two examples show the unique contribution that mindfulness training can make to facilitate successful psychotherapy for anxiety and depression. We are taught that we have to fix our problems and get rid of negative thoughts and feelings, but actually if we simply learn to be present with the underlying emotional energy that powers these reactions, we create the ideal conditions in which inner suffering will transform itself quite naturally, and under the healing influence of our innate intuitive wisdom-intelligence. The answer always lies within the problem; the trick is to learn to listen, and mindfulness is the perfection of this skill.
Mindfulness as taught in Mindfulness Psychotherapy and Mindfulness Meditation Therapy, is a particular awareness skill that teaches us to be aware of what is happening while it is happening. Through diligent practice, we begin to recognize reactions as they arise form moment to moment throughout the day. We learn to respond to each reaction with the simple formula: STOP, LOOK and LISTEN. When a reaction arises we simply greet it with: “No. Not now. I choose not to go down that path.” In the very act of recognition of a reaction, we are given a brief moment of choice about whether we want to react or not. The habit to react may be very ingrained, but through persistent mindfulness practice, we can open up this space in which there is choice and freedom, such that it becomes longer in duration and more frequent during the day.
In another session of Mindfulness Meditation Therapy, a young man in his late twenties, wanted to overcome intense anxiety and sadness about an upcoming move, away from his home. He felt a general anxiety about the unknown and unfamiliar and this had intensified to such an extent that he would experience panic attacks in crowded places,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], such as the supermarket. When he focused mindfully on the felt-sense of this emotion, he noticed a black sphere in the middle of his inner visual field. As he continued to investigate this abstract image, he further noticed that there was a yellow layer on the rim of the black sphere. After further mindful-investigation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he was surprised to notice that a second sphere arose, but this was yellow on the inside and black on the outside. As he continued to focus on the unfolding imagery, yet a third object appeared, which he described as a “pink and fuzzy” cloud. When asked what needed to happen, the pink cloud enveloped the two black and yellow spheres,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which eventually lost their rigidity and simply evaporated like a cloud of steam. This led to a tremendous upwelling of feeling of inner strength and calm. When he focused his attention back on the thoughts about the upcoming move, he noticed that the anxiety and sadness had become significantly less intense and he felt better able to meet the challenges that lay ahead.

One of the most interesting ways that emotions unfold is through experiential imagery. This is a very special kind of imagery that arises from the mindful-awareness of an inner emotion. This is what makes it “experiential,” meaning that it arises from our inner intuitive experience, rather than as the product of deliberate visualization. The psyche thinks in pictures, not words, and uses imagery to organize memories and emotions. Experiential imagery is found at the core of all emotions, and the feeling energy of an emotion is encoded in the detailed sub-modalities of color, shape, position, movement and other properties of the imagery. For example, the emotion of depression and anxiety is very often encoded in the color black; anger in red; the feeling of calmness is associated with green; and healing is associated with pink. Through mindfulness, we can uncover the detailed structure of this inner imagery, and in the freedom of mindful-consciousness, the imagery will undergo a process of transformation. Our inner innate intelligence, called satipanna by the Buddha, actually uses this experiential imagery to make changes that lead to the resolution of emotional suffering, called dukkha. The psyche is more than capable of healing itself if given the freedom of conscious awareness in which to change, and this is precisely what happens, when we sustain mindfulness and make the emotion of anxiety the very object of our mindfulness meditation.
This is the active part of mindfulness. However,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we don’t stop there, because mindfulness also has a passive and receptive dimension,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which allows us to respond, rather than react, to the experiences that we encounter. In that moment of recognition,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we can choose to respond by forming a relationship with the emotion. This is the relationship of mindful listening and investigation. The power of simply being 100% present, not reacting and not even thinking about the emotion that has arisen, is the heart of successful therapy. If you want to change anxiety or depression, you must establish this kind of relationship in which you allow the emotion to exist in the safe space of mindful awareness. Through mindfulness we can maintain this relationship,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], without becoming caught up in the emotion, or in resisting or fighting the emotion. We learn to just sit with the inner pain as you would sit with a friend in pain. When you have established this kind of mindful-relationship and provide a safe inner space around the emotion, it will respond by changing. The more present you are, the more it will unfold, unwind and transform.
We continued to work on this new sense of inner strength and calm. Interestingly, the imagery changed yet again into the inner image of a large green tree. As he focused mindfully on this inner picture, noticing the leaves and branches, his feeling of inner strength and security increased. The feelings were literally encoded in the green leaves that symbolized calmness, and in the solid branches that could support him. When he was asked to imagine visiting a supermarket, he imagined being there in that crowded and chaotic environment, but now protected by the awareness of his inner tree! He no longer felt the panic and anxiety associated with the unknown.

When we observe this natural, experiential imagery with mindfulness, the imagery always changes in response to our attention. If we let it change, without the interference or distractions of the thinking mind, it will change in a way that resolves inner emotional suffering. One woman, had been experiencing chronic anxiety and panic attacks that led to a phobia of flying, which was a big problem for her, since she had to fly to Sydney on business. She came for a session of Mindfulness Meditation Therapy to work on her anxiety. I had her close her eyes and focus mindfulness on the inner feeling of anxiety, and simply watch to see what emerged. Within five minutes, she noticed the image of a dark, menacing black object that seemed to sit in front of her left shoulder. This was her inner image of her panic and anxiety. When she focused on this black object, she noticed brown tendrils that extended outwards to her throat, literally strangling her. I directed her to keep watching the scene and to ask the black object what it needed from her. To her amazement, it answered her with,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], “I want to be allowed to die.” She continued to be mindful and simply watched the unfolding scene, and in so doing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], gave the black object permission to change, and die. It did this very gracefully,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], transforming into a pile of white ash that eventually blew away. When she refocused attention on her anxiety and panic, she found that they had greatly diminished to little more than butterflies in the stomach. Interestingly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her fear of flying also subsided and she was able to make that trip to Australia.

I felt ready to record album number five!
“The Secret” isn’t based on the movie I was in of the same name. Instead, it was prompted by a haunting song by Leonard Cohen. His song had the hypnotic refrain “Everybody knows…” but his lyrics were negative. His dark song is a great one to commit suicide to. I wanted something hypnotic but with a positive message. I wanted something healing. The result is what I call “The Secret” and you know it will do you good to listen to it.
Christmas was only two months away. It would be a miracle to write and record five new songs by then – especially starting from zero – and certainly after exhausting myself having just completed my fourth album, The Healing Song.
I did, too.
We both felt the exhilarating energy of having a goal that scared us and yet delighted us.
Yes, even you.
“Sperichil” is rockabilly music. It’s pure fun. No special message in the lyrics but the voice and the vibe is all about be happy now! The name is simply the early spelling of the word “spiritual.” I surprised myself recording this song as I spontaneously howled like a wolf during parts of it. There is a happy contagiousness to this track that simply makes me smile and feel good,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Isn’t that what life is all about? Isn’t that healing music? Be happy now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Smile! Dance! Love!
Was I,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
All of the above is a reminder that miracles are possible for all of us.
And it all begins with an intention.
I’m told music doesn’t usually come together this quickly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or easily, or with this much energy and focus. But we got together in the studio and made space for magic to happen around my songs.
To think that this was created out of “thin air” is astonishing. To think that the songs are so good and the music so amazing and the messages so relevant, just makes me stop and stare in awe and gratitude.
What do you want to attract?
“Sun Will Rise” came to me “out of the blue,” as I held a guitar and just started to sing what came into my being. When I first played it for Daniel, he was speechless. He said it had the potential to be a radio hit. My staff says my message to the world is to have faith, that the “sun will rise” again. Your current reality is just that: current. It’ll change. The sun will rise again. This song is your reminder.
Within weeks I had over two dozen pretty good songs. From those,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I picked nine that I thought were solid. I left a tenth idea open to inspirational improvisation in the studio.
What miracle would be cool to experience?
“Expectations” is a hypnotic intermission where I played a special double-neck guitar, where the top is a regular guitar and the bottom is a baritone guitar. With the professionals behind me on this one, the result is something I could listen to all day long. When I first heard it in the studio, I said, “Call this one Expectations, because it suggests something is about to happen, but you don’t know what.” You are free to expect whatever you want, positive or negative, and this music helps you feel the moment. Talk about healing!
I couldn’t turn off the creative juices!
Declare it.
It’s yet another miracle.
Daniel suggested we find a way to ramp up my energy for music. He didn’t know how, but he felt there was a solution.
“I know how,” I told him.
I created this fifth album of healing songs by declaring an intention. I didn’t have any reason or motivation or evidence that I could write ten new (and good, IMHO) songs in two months. But declaring an intention “called forth” all this music.
Remember, I didn’t have any ideas for new songs or any passion for new music. I felt tapped out. Yet the new intention “called forth” more music. The new goal stirred my creative self. Within days I had new songs coming to me. Within weeks I had almost two dozen ideas.
You can do this, too.
I felt done.
I knew a way to jump start the muse, but I wasn’t sure I wanted to do it.
“You Gotta!” is self-help rock and roll. It’s fun, upbeat, and carries the message that “you gotta” take action. Since I’m a big proponent of action, this song and its message felt like the right lead for the new album. Thanks to “my band” – drummer Joe Vitale, bass player Glenn Fukunaga, lead guitarist Daniel Barrett – this song opens with a “you gotta dance to this” feel. Add saxophone by Greg Williams and this one is irresistibly delicious! You gotta hear it!
Miracles are indeed happening all the time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
This story is living proof of it.

“Isaac the Psychic” is my attempt to create a Shel
Silverstein – Johnny Cash “Boy Named Sue” kind of song. I came up with a character, and a story, and a funny chorus, and weaved it into a song. My band — the experts that they are — created a Reggae upbeat rhythm and the whole thing came together. It’s funny and memorable. You’ll smile listening to it. After all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I’m so psychic, I know you’re reading this.
Now here’s where the story gets really interesting…
In case you are curious, here are the stories behind each track on Sun Will Rise:
“Why not go for ten songs?”
Other times I felt inspired to check out early or vintage rock and roll, what’s called rockabilly music. I simply followed the muse to see what occurred. I loved the searching, exploring and learning. (Always follow inspiration, too.)
That made me gasp. It would be raising the bar even for me. I had already broken records by creating four albums in less than two years. Four miracles were plenty. But I accepted the challenge. We agreed that I would strive to create ten original songs within two months, and together we would record them to create my fifth album.
The result is my fifth music album, titled Sun Will Rise.
And it feels like another miracle.
I took a deep breath and said, “I can set the intention to record five new songs by Christmas.”
What do you want to “call forth”?
He asked me to explain.
When I held the finished audio CD in my hands,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and listened to the original music I wrote and performed, brought to life with the musicians who supported me, I started to cry.
“Train of Women” is a rock ballad about a man who faces his fears and falls in love. It’s about one hundred and fifty women, all wearing bikinis, who come to see him. He is at first afraid, asking for everything from a crocodile to a body guard to being taken to Area 51, but by the end he falls in love. The old saying is true,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], what looks like your demon is really your angel in disguise. This song is fun, fast, funny and more. Call it a Rorschach test song. Whatever you get from it, is what you get from it. It’s a mirror. It’s “Healing Music” at it’s best. Rock on!
We both felt expectant, uncertain, open and willing.
But we had no idea how a new album would come out of nothing.
As we talked, I had a sneaking suspicion that I may be deceiving myself. After all, self sabotage is rampant in virtually each of us and we usually don’t even know we are doing it.
It was October of 2012 that I told my music producer and friend, Daniel Barrett, that my desire to make more music was dead. I didn’t feel inspired or connected to the muse. I was happy with the four albums of healing music I had already created, but I didn’t see any more on the horizon.
Daniel didn’t miss a beat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
“Ti Amo” was written for my love, Nerissa. I felt the urge to write a love song and thought, what better way to do it than to think of who I love and just write a song for her. I did. I believe anyone can feel the love in this one. Nerissa says she does. Love heals.
I would be sitting, reading a book on my iPad, and suddenly a song idea would enter my consciousness. I was smart enough to stop everything and write it down. (Always take action, remember.)
“My Electric Car” is about my relationship to my electric car (which I’ve written about on this blog before). I love this song because of the lyrics and the blues rock music the band came up with. I really believe this one could become a gas guzzler’s anthem. You gotta hear it. There are moments in this track that send shivers of joy up my spine. It’s an example of how music becomes magic. Whew!
My band — not really “mine” but they were the same musicians who recorded Strut! and The Healing Song with me — got together again. We went into the studio on December 18th and 19th — right before Christmas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you’ll note — and recorded ten new tracks.
“Super Heroes” came to me after my guitar teacher,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mathew Dixon, taught me a new chord progression. I wrote words to that progression. Since I had just met actor/bodybuilder/Hulk Lou Ferrigno, and actor/Superman Dean Cain, I turned the song into messages from their characters. This is another feel good, relaxing song. It could be the theme to a television show. It’s about you being the new super hero. Don’t wait for a hero. Be one now.

3/ Cycle Your Strength Training - The development of muscle and strength is interrelated so the exercise session will have to be designed so that increases in strength are equal to increases in functional muscle.
Cycling intensity through changes in repetitions and poundage's throughout your training program is an effective way to maintain progression and avoid training plateaus.
Therefore you need to do one set per exercise, remembering to complete the training session in 20 - 30 minutes so to have the most stimulus as possible and then move on to the next exercise.
What it won't tell you is that the guy is a professional and probably doesn't have to hold down a steady job, pay off a mortgage or raise a couple of kids.
Lets have a look:
Current research shows that single set training is as beneficial as multiple set training, decreasing the chances of over training and saving energy for other lifts required during the workout.
Are you sick and tired of picking up that latest body building magazine off the shelve, opening it to the latest program on the current bodybuilding star and discovering that he is using a six day split program that has you in the gym for four hours and day!!

If you are able to generate the same force and intensity for this second set then the first set was not worked hard enough.
The amount of cortisol released is highly dependant upon the length of training time.
2/ Perform One Set Per Body Part - Having performed one set of an exercise to total failure then it should be near on impossible to generate the same force and intensity for another set.
All the main structures of the body are worked hard during this time,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], remembering that as you get stronger in your upper body exercises i.e. Dips, Lat Pull downs, you will also add size to your upper arms as well as your shoulders.

Compound multi-joint movements have to be used as these offer more training stimulus, are more functional and heavier loads can be lifted. Examples of compound movements include squats,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], bench press,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], dips,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and chin-ups. Performing three to four exercises with high intensity during a session are what is needed.
The thing is, the whole body is worked hard,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], rest and recuperation is allowed to take place and at the next exercise session we push out a few more reps than before with the same weight, then we have gotten stronger i.e. more muscle.
4/ Don't Train To Long - Training itself causes the breakdown of muscle tissue. When a person trains very intensely cortisol is released into the blood stream, which causes the breakdown of muscle tissue.
Because you are doing one set per exercise, you will have to work it hard and to total failure.
Now that you are armed with this information,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you wont need to spend all of your time in the gym, by all means workout hard while you are in there but when you are finished go home and grow and enjoy life.
The thing is you don't have to train like an athlete to put on muscle, all you need to do is follow these action ideas below and you will start making big gains fast without spending all your time in the Gym.
Therefore to minimize this effect training should be completed in the absolute minimum time required which is no longer than 20 to 30 minutes max,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

5/ Don't Cheat - Do not cheat on your reps! Every strength-training trainee runs into this problem sooner or later and it will grind your gains to a stand still. There are many ways to increase the intensity of your sets and the weights used in order to maximize results.
Cheating to increase your weights actually takes strain off your muscles and places it on your joints, which is counterproductive.
Your blood sugar levels are also dropping by this time, so do what you have to do in this time and get out of the gym, go home and grow.
If you give the first set 100% effort and work it to total failure (You cannot move the bar after the last rep) there is no more requirement for further stimulation,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
1/ Back to Basics - To build muscle you must train short and with intensity, you only have a limited amount of energy per session. Tests reveal that blood sugar levels drop dramatically after 20 minutes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so exercise selection is crucial.

I know that I always stress the importance of testing, testing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and re-testing when we believe we have collapsed an issue with a client. Much has also been said about working through the fear of the fear of any phobia since it can be just as strong as the presenting fear/phobia. I’ve recently seen firsthand the need for this piece of validation. Mary called me to ostensibly work on her infertility issues which she had been attempting to work through using conventional methods. After a few minutes it became clear to me that her greatest challenge was an etemophobia that had been plaguing her many years. Etemophobia is the irrational fear of vomit including seeing vomit or fearing that you yourself may vomit. This woman’s phobia was so severe that she had lost a significant amount of weight and was down to 95 lbs simply because the feeling of fullness in her stomach had made her worry about having to vomit. I immediately felt that this was connected to her inability to bear children; morning sickness,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], infant spit up,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], etc.
Moral of this story is test, test,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], test, and don’t forget to work on the fear of the fear which can sometimes be as powerful (if not more so) than the fear itself.
Using some intuitive detective work I found that Mary had been sexually abused at age 7 and when I asked her to describe the emotions behind that incident she said she felt “disgusted with herself”. We then did a number of rounds of tapping on, “Even though I feel disgusted with myself because ___ touched me here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I deeply and completely accept myself” and “Even though I blame myself for the abuse, I forgive myself”
Next we worked directly on the phobia itself and I was relatively sure that the fear was gone. I asked her to test herself by watch the Exorcist and she mentioned the movie First Dates which has a particularly gruesome scene where a walrus throws up a hundred pounds of fish in a veterinary’s office. We had a follow session where I felt that the fear was in fact gone and she had started to gain weight, but apparently we hadn’t completely resolved the fear of the fear.
At the end of the day we were at the very last exhibit and there in a glass case was the dreaded object of Tessa’s terror. Just then I had a moment to talk to Tessa off to the side away from her guardians. I reminded Tessa that she and I had worked on this fear and that I thought she would be fine and asked her if she was ready to have a look. The feeling of relief was obvious as she took my hand and saw the creature. A big smile arose as she said, “Cool!”

Mary called me recently to tell me that she had been in a bar when a man next to her suddenly leaned over his bar stool and had vomited all over her while she remained calm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A week later she helped a sick co-worker in a stall of their office by holding her head as this woman hurled her lunch. Mary was thrilled that she finally had proof that this incapacitating fear was really gone.

The snake fear was only a minor side issue we worked on that day and quite frankly it seems so minor I felt fine about not having tested her as thoroughly as I normally would have.
A few days ago I went as an adult chaperone with this girl’s class to the zoo. Tessa had told her little friends that she was worried about seeing snakes at the zoo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. All morning her friends warmly hugged Tessa and they took turns looking ahead at the exhibits making sure that poor Tessa wouldn’t run into any surprises,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Could this be a secondary benefit I wondered?

I started this inquiry into receiving when I offered free sample coaching sessions for my business, Change Your Handwriting. To receive is not to ask for what I want until I find someone who will give it to me. It is making a space inside of me to receive, to take delivery of. It is being clear about what it is that would serve me, absolutely clear. For me the power of affirmations is not in repeating the saying over and over again, but in listening to the objections that arise in me as I say the affirmation. While all of this is quite true and important, I presented it with the zeal of a missionary, being the one that needed to hear it as much as anyone else did. Isn’t it funny that we get to teach what we must learn?
I have a rule I follow. (Well, of course, sometime I don’t use it, but I regret it every time.) My rule is this: My answer is “No” to any offer or engagement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], unless I am 100% “Yes”. Sometimes I figure out what makes me say “somewhat no” and re-negotiate that part of the offer.
When my world fell apart, my marriage ended, I moved off the Farm, and away from my children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I began to see the world differently. For almost 30 years I had been a Mother and Wife, I had taken those roles very seriously. I knew how to take care of others, did I know how to take care of myself? Was I able to fill my cup up and give from the overflow? Had I learned to place myself first? No, no,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and no!
My friend called, “You want a new Queen-size mattress?” She could not fit it inside her storage unit, no matter what she tried. My internal dialogue went something like this: I had thought about wanting a Queen-size mattress, but this one might not be “the one” I want, so I am not 100% sure. After thinking about it for a while, I offered this deal in return: “I am willing to help you out in a pinch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I will take your mattress, but if it is not right for me, I will give it back to you”. Receiving is not about asking people for what you want; rather it is accepting what is given to you,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when you are offered what truly would make your heart sing. It is not about accepting whatever is given to you, just because it was offered. When Mom asks if I want the almost new sheepskin duster from the Hall closet, it is okay to say no, if I have not been lusting after one. It is not about making do with what comes my way, but receiving what I want with discernment.
One day I realized I had not received a massage in a long time. I always functioned better when I received the extra touching in a massage. A massage would be nice, I thought. Since I was not bringing in extra income, I wondered how this might happen.
Receiving is making a space on the inside into which I can accept. This is often not easy, at least not for a seasoned co-dependent like me. It is easier to give than receive, but not better, both are needed. Giving I stay in control, I have the power. Receiving feels vulnerable, in the flow, and feminine. When I allow myself to receive, fully and openly, I strengthen something inside that makes it easier and easier to allow others to give to me. This is a very sweet something I want more of in my life, how about you?

It is not your fault. There is a physical reason you feel compelled and out of control. The good news is that it is just a feeling. While it is not your fault, it is within your reach to take yourself out of the reaction and back into the realm of choice. Being back in the driver's seat of your life is an option.
Now that you know what is happening you can stop reacting to the reaction,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which makes the feeling of compulsion multiply.
First, when we perceive stress, our bodies react. By the time you get the compulsive feeling of "I can't stop!" the amygdala gland in your brain has already flooded your brain with a hyper stress response. That is where the compelling feeling comes from.
3) In advance, create an emergency response to fall back on. For example: journaling, phoning a friend, jumping jacks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], doodling, prayer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], meditation, or going for a walk. Apply your response the moment you feel a trigger coming on.
2) Remove yourself from the situation. If you stay in the kitchen, or the car, or the room with the food it is harder to stop a binge. If you are inside, go outside. If you are in a car,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], drive to a parking lot and get out of the car. If you are in the kitchen,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go the back yard. This approach confuses the brain and can stop a stress response.
Emotional eating, binge eating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], stress eating, trigger eating, compulsive eating all boil down to one thing. The trigger. The triggered compulsive feelings that drive an urge to splurge or binge are what leave us feeling helpless.
The problem takes further root when we end up having a reaction to our reaction. If we fear the compulsive feeling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it worsens. By knowing what is going on, we actually begin to calm ourselves down and examine what triggered us in the first place. Overeating is not about the food. It is about what is going on in our heart.
I'm now into my 12th year at being free from emotional eating triggers and have learned a lot. In order to fully move beyond triggers to eat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we need to examine the anatomy behind a compulsive stress response.
Next, catch yourself in the emotion. When you feel the compulsion kick in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], remind yourself, "It is just my amygdala flooding!" (It even sounds funny when you say it and that is ok,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will help you lighten the mood).
1) Remind yourself about the brain's stress response and follow-up with a "snap-out of it" statement. For example: "I don't want to eat my problems away; I want to be healthy!" Or, "I can stop this. It is within my power." Write these on a notecard and keep them with you at all times. Read them when you need them.
The above scenario was a daily experience for me. I tried to run, but couldn't hide from the next binge that would leave me in its wake. I believed if I beat myself up enough I could stop. Not true. If I dieted enough I would heal. Also, not true. If only I had more will power, the triggers would go away. Not exactly. Hopefully, your experience is not as drastic, draining and foreboding as mine was.
Here are three steps you can take to free you from a triggered eating response:
When you are triggered into overeating,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], you feel the anguish, the compulsion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the bewilderment. Thoughts of "I can't stop!" run amok like a broken record. Before you know it, your stomach is in pain, guilt begins to surface and the love/hate relationship to food leaves you in its wake... until the next time it strikes.
Third, have an emergency back-up plan ready in advance. You've acknowledged your body has just being flooded with fight-or-flight hormones. Now, remove yourself from the situation so your body can calm down and reboot itself. This is key!

Oh you would have thought she pulled the Jack the Ripper card. In this age of needing to come off as Spiritually Correct, nobody likes to think of themselves as deceitful, cunning or as a trickster (unless their doing a magic act in Vegas). Yet, sometimes deceit is necessary for survival. The judgment that deceit, cunning and trickster were fixed states of being and were bad or wrong was amazing to me.
And by focusing on that, the concept of creativity, mystery, family and nurturing were all overlooked. When the spotlight went on the latter, well, those were good qualities. What if being cunning or deceitful saves the lives of your family? Is that good or bad? What if you come from a vicious family? Is that good or bad? Once again – it’s simply our filter now of concepts.
Sometimes the Coyote message is about deception – how we deceive ourselves……do we do this through our emotional life?
There is another piece in this and that is many people fear or dislike Coyotes because of their predatory nature. Somehow,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we are deceiving ourselves to not take some responsibility for displacing them. Yet,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it’s easier to dislike them.
A woman called me for a phone session about her horse. We’ll call her Nancy. We had a lovely session, funny, enlightening,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], hopefully helpful.
I don’t know that the Coyote’s spirit specifically knew she had a gun in the back of her truck and was calling out “Hey Nancy, help me!” I do know that the Coyote needed help and that Nancy’s Spirit knew she needed something in that moment in time in order to grow and their Spirits were a perfect match for that need for that moment. Sometimes that’s all we are for another being is part of a Divine match. We don’t even know the impact we have on someone or a group of people.
Now being half city chick living on a farm,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I jumped a little in my seat as I read this. Knowing it was the kindest thing to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it still left me with the question, would I have had the guts in that moment? Anyway enough about that…..Nancy was writing because she was really plagued by the whole event. She was so sad for the coyote.
I said to Nancy – is it possible that you are just personalizing this loss through your filter?? What if the concept were true that the reason you feel the Coyote so strongly is because that Coyote is just trying to say “THANK YOU – you helped me. What can I do for you now?”
It’s easy to filter through our own emotions. Animals don’t process that way. They may weigh in with a few more sophisticated emotions if they have been domesticated and living in our homes, barns or our yards. When it comes down to it – it is very simple. They know the freedom that leaving this body provides.
I wrote this a couple of months ago. In April I held my Animal Alchemy class. Each of the students pulled an animal card for the weekend to meditate on or to relate to or to have that energy come in and assist with the healing work we were doing. One woman pulled the Coyote card.
A few weeks later, Nancy e-mailed me and said “Joan, I was driving down an old highway and I noticed that a coyote had been hit by a car and was on the side of the road and was going in circles – his hind end wasn’t working, he was neurological.” She said she felt so awful, she didn’t know what to do and she pulled over. She remembered that she had a gun in her truck and she put the coyote out of his misery.
I reminded Nancy that she helped this coyote – she then asked “Did the coyote’s spirit call me over to do this?”
Deceit, cunning, trickster, family, creativity, mystery, family and nurturing only hold the value I give those concepts.
She wondered if she had done the right thing and couldn’t get the sadness out of her system. In Ted Andrews book Animal Speak: “There is always hidden wisdom where the coyote is concerned”,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Ted Andrews considers the Coyote to both be Wisdom and Folly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
I said to Nancy – what if that Coyote is joyful? What if that Coyote is now in that eternal state of bliss? All this seemed to make sense to Nancy – the consuming haunting feeling vanished. She and I knew at that moment she has a coyote Guardian Angel – a friend for life,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. A totem if you will. Some well earned grace for helping the Coyote.

Nancy and I continued an e-dialogue over this situation. In the thread, I reminded her that the sadness was her version of sadness as she processed the event emotionally.
